André Gunko

André Gunko was born in Horta, Portugal in 1997, into a family of musicians. He first started to play the cello at the age of six. His teacher was Orest Grytsyuk, at the Regional Conservatory of Angra do Heroísmo (nowadays known as the Escola de Tomas de Borba).

He attended several masterclasses, among others with Levon Mouradian, Vladimir Panteleev, Nathaniel Rosen, Herwig Tachezi, Ulf Tischbirek, Leonid Gorokhov, Hatto Beyerle, and Natalia Gutman. He has also been chosen as one of five cellists for the “Gstaad String Academy” in August 2013 to the class of Ivan Monighetti with a full scholarship. Important impulses give additional studies at the International Music Academy of the Principality of Liechtenstein as well as artists such as Valter Despalj, Jens Peter Maintz, and Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt.

André Gunko is the winner of the 1st prizes of several National and International competitions. Already in 2007, he won the International Competition for Young Musicians in the International Forum of Music in Madeira, the contest Santa Cecilia, Category D in Porto, as well as the contest Marilia Rocha, Vila do Conde. This was followed by first prizes in the Competition for String Instruments Alto Minho, Category B, in Viana do Castelo (2008), and, in 2011, in the competition Santa Cecilia, Category C in Porto. 

He won the 1st prize in the National competition “Prémio Jovens Músicos” concurso da Rádio e Televisão de Portugal in 2013 and performed with the Gulbenkian Orchestra in Centro Cultural de Belém (CCB) in Lisbon. In 2021 he has won the 2nd prize in the competition “PJM 34º Edição” Nível Superior Violoncelo. At the Verão Clássico Academy Awards 2021 in Lisbon André Gunko won 1st prize in the cello category, which he shared ex aequo with four other cellists.

As a winner of the “Prémio Jovens Músicos 2013” in Lisbon, André represented Portugal at the “Eurovision Young Musicians 2014“ in Cologne where he performed with the WDR Symphony Orchestra.

During his studies André Gunko participated in numerous concert activities of the Região Autónoma dos Açores, Portugal.

In September 2015 André joined the class of Ivan Monighetti in Hochschule Für Musik in Basel, where he finished his Bachelor of Arts FHNW in Musik in 2018.

Currently he is a Master of Music Violoncello Solist student in the class of Prof. Xenia Janković in the Hochschule für Musik Detmold in Germany.
